National Geographic Atlas of the World, Eighth Edition
National Geographic’s Atlas of the World released its Eighth Edition in 2004, its first update
of the new millennium. National Geographic has long been known for the high quality of their maps -
as readers of the National Geographic Magazine are aware - and this atlas does not disappoint.
More than 15,000 changes have been made for this edition, as compared to the seventh edition published in 1999. This new edition is a thoroughly modern approach to an atlas. There are 3 amazing world maps, a satellite view, a physical landform map, and a political map. Additional satellite maps of each continent, when compared with the physical and political map, combine to illustrate the Earth's geography in a manner that is both subtly nuanced and stunningly attractive. There are over 60 up-to-date regional political maps, 243 maps of major cities, maps of all the oceans, and 17 thematic maps addressing today’s pressing global concerns, such as biodiversity, terror, and the world economy. The 136 page index is comprehensive and includes over 144,000 place names. Also featured are images from the Hubble Space Telescope and some of the latest information gathered from the recent rover expeditions on Mars. These elements are interspersed with National Geographic's stunning photographs and well-researched narrative. While this book is at heart an atlas, the depth of information can make it atlas seem almost like an encyclopedia. Certainly, the Eighth Edition of the National Geographic Atlas of the World is a lot more than just a book of maps. For the well-rounded home library, this book is the quintessential reference on world geography.
